Art Is A Serious Business

Susi Grell Knox was born and raised in the suburbs of Montreal, and has always loved art.

The first masterpiece she ever created was at the tender age of five, on her bedroom wall, using an HB pencil. This loose rendition of a single balloon on a string was not greatly appreciated by her mother. Nevertheless, not being easily discouraged, she went on to study Fine Arts in Montreal at Vanier College, then moved to Toronto to major in Illustration at Ontario College of Art.

Susi Grell Knox is an accomplished award winning Canadian Toronto painter/illustrator working mainly in watercolours, oils, inks, and digital painting. Her technique is both light hearted, often humourous, as seen in her watercolours, while her love of the Old Masters glazing techniques is reflected in her more representational oil paintings, both techniques exhibiting her fascination of bright bold colours.

She has designed for magazines, newspapers, greeting cards, interior design, storefront wall murals, and four children's books. She won first in a Canada Nationwide Christmas Card Contest.

Currently residing in the Greater Toronto Area, Susi is developing a cartoon strip depicting her funny life experiences, as well as amusing daily observations of married life, when she is not painting or drawing balloons on the walls.

How I got hooked on colour...

My love affair with colour began early in grade one, when the girl who sat in front of me wore this sparkling glittering hat with hundreds of multi-coloured sequins. I was instantly transfixed by the kaleidoscopic sparkle: there were alizarin crimsons like fresh ripe cherries; bright cadmium yellows of wild canaries; rich cobalt blues reminiscent of Mom's precious perfume bottles; sparkling silver like Christmas tree tinsel; and royal purples, that of grape popsicles glistening in the heat of the summer. Her hat was so luminescent and spectacular, it seemed to light up the room and my fate of becoming an artist was sealed forever.
